    Miiverse issues kept me for a bit so... Damage calculations meant that Ricken was always doomed to die that turn, what could be changed was if Vaike died. Obviously better to lose 1 unit and not 2 right? ...Then I was convinced that the enemies would attack Virion since he couldn't retaliate so I did all damage calculations based on that...they then killed Vaike. Plus side he saved Lissa's life!
