IMHO, the side-quests are worth it for the extra dialogue and/or differences. It's also a good way of trying out other job classes.

Well, I'm chapter 7, and it's a bit annoying. Mastered 80 of classes. I agree, in most RPG, you fight monster in a non optimal way, because of a lack of knowledge on weak points and poor choosen equipment/abilities. So it's a very good point to face the bosses a second time, for a more satisafying gameplay experience (with every single attack reaching weak spot). But serously.. It's too much here.
