I think there have been four playable characters announced. Some of the earlier screenshots showed just Magnolia, but now we have Yuu, Jean and Nikolai too.

If you just do the story, they are about that, until the last chapter which is longer. But I recommend doing a few side quests. One in Florem in chapter 5, one that appears late chapter 6 and all of them in 7 and 8. If you do that, it'll take longer, but it'll get you new stuff and the later ones are really fun.

There are others in 5 and 6 I enjoy doing, but it depends on how much you're enjoying the plot. I can tell you when you're there so I don't spoil it.

It's really only for the story, not the fights. The fights in 5 and 6 are boring. In 7 they have great steals. In 8 they're really challenging. What you could do is copy your file when you get to chapter 5. Rush through the story, then go back on your copied file and do the sidequests at a later date.

Well, the best thing about this is that if you do decide to leave it to play ORAS when it comes out, the journal will tell you anything you've forgotten when you come back to it.

It is possible to go through Chapter 6, 7, 8 and both endings in a week. A lot of grinding may be necessary (depending on how much you levelled up earlier in the game) but it is still possible.
