  • Hi I know this is a silly question, but have any tips for drawing? Or how to practice? I really wanna get good at drawing but I'm pretty bad atm.

  • Hey! Don't worry about it, it's not silly. I'm self-taught and have no idea how much you know already, so it's hard for me to think up general advice, but here's some things that help me: 1. Practise. Simple as that. You won't get better at drawing until you've put time into it. Start simple and work your way up to more complicated things.

  • 2. Use references! When learning to draw something, have a picture of it to look at. Draw what you SEE, not what you THINK YOU SEE. For example, Olimar has two arms, yes, but how long are they? Where do they connect to his suit? Use the reference as help. You can draw something in your own style, though. Many of my drawings are! But I suggest you do that once you have gotten good at drawing it...

  • ...There's a difference between stylised and inaccurate. Also, don't just draw your reference picture over and over. Once you've drawn it a few times, start trying to draw your own picture using the reference as a guide. Are they walking in the reference? Try drawing them running, or sitting, or interacting with something. The reference is a guide, not a set of rules.

  • 3. Break things down into shapes - they look much simpler when you break them down into circles and squares. When I draw a character, I sketch them using shapes. Then I go over that with more detail, then draw the final picture on top. On paper you sketch lightly with a pencil, then draw darker lines on top of the sketch. On Miiverse, I use a thinner pen and slowly erase the sketch as I draw.

  • 4. Look at other people's drawings and ask yourself what about them you like. Is it how they draw expressions? How they shade? Bear it in mind and try it for yourself sometime. Don't rip them off completely – try and put together your own style out of things you like from several different people.

  • OK, that's all I have for unspecific general advice, so I hope it was helpful! If you have any specific questions as to how to do things, please don't be afraid to ask! I don't know how much help I'll be, I'm perfectly happy to talk about it.

  • I use the gamepad myself and don't have a problem with it, outside of accidentally exiting out of a picture. So... I'm willing to bet you haven't practised using it. Step 1. I've drawn enough and seen enough pictures to know the gamepad isn't an insurmountable obstacle. Then again, I use a cintiq to draw, so I'm used to that sort of stuff. Just keep trying. And... don't I know you? :)
