I really should play more Sonic games…

  • Nah, don't hold your breath. Some are relatively good. Most are mediocre or bad.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) is my favourite. I would've got 3D Sonic the Hedgehog, if it would let me play it with PAL-speed music.

  • Shouldn't that be "would've gotten"?

…Maybe, but I'm not that bothered about grammar. (Anymore.)

  • How is Sonic Rush? I'm thinking about getting it sometime, mainly because of its awesome soundtrack. @Ben That game had awful music though. It literally sounds like MIDIs composed by a 7 year old.

  • Rush is great, actually. It's a solid 2D Sonic, and a solid game, period. Yeah, I say get it, or wait for a VC release.

The music is OK, for me. I have a strange liking for MIDI-based music. (Especially the music in StreetPass Mii Plaza, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (GBA), and others.) The reason why I chose Windows Mobile 6.5 (around Windows 7's time) over Windows Phone was because it boasted .MIDI support. Sure, my phone's touch screen is a bit unresponsive, but it'll do for now.

Don't forget, Sonic Chronicles had troubled development. Bioware's agreement with Sega ran out during the development, so that they could focus on Dragon Age: Origins. But they finished enough of the game (in late beta) to launch it. It's not really a case of "poorly-made" as it is a case of "could've been much better than the final result", like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (PC).

The only noticeable things I remember are how, sometimes during the scripted-movement overworld bits, jumping uses the standing or running animation. The engine seems pretty bare-bones, after all, which makes it look pretty amusing at times. The sound effects all seem like placeholders, just how I like it. The music, on the other hand, seems to have been hurriedly adapted into MIDI. (I love it!)

  • @Ben (Original poster, like the other Ben wants me to call you) That's great. Hopefully, it'll get a Virtual Console release. I think I'd rather play it on my New 3DS though, because the screen layouts you can choose from on DS VC games seem pretty bad. @Ben Wow, didn't ask for an entire rant but okay. It isn't only because of the music being MIDI-like that I don't like it, it's simply -

  • -extremely poorly sequenced. Just compare the remixes with the originals and you'll see what I mean. Pretty sure the composer was a noob. I haven't played the game so I can't say much about everything else, but the music IS bad.

I didn't mean to make that look like a rant. I just have a lot to say, as usual. (I forgot to mention that Bioware was acquired by EA just before Sonic Chronicles was at the end of its development cycle.) I know you might say the music sounds poorly sequenced, but at least it's not as bad as Rayman Advance. (That game's music sounds almost nothing like the original Atari Jaguar/MS-DOS game.)

  • (Sorry for the late reply, I didn't feel like replying until now) I compared the Band Land theme from Rayman GBA to the Atari Jaguar version (since it's the only Rayman song I've heard so it's easier to compare). It is bad, but the Atari Jaguar version wasn't that good either to begin with. The Playstation version however is amazing.

…And so was the MS-DOS version - the one I remember. The DSiWare version cut out most of the music, but at least it now loops, instead of acting like Windows Media Player.

  • How is the DSiWare version of Rayman? I've been thinking about downloading it, though I'm not sure if I want to if they cut out too many good songs.

  • The DSiWare version isn't bad, but it isn't that good, either. It takes a picture of your face whenever you activate a checkpoint, whether you like it or not. Some of the music was removed, but was programmed to loop. There are now "Anti-Dark Matters", like achievement, but they're really hard. All in all, I'd recommend the DSiWare Rayman if you don't have any other means to play it.

  • It doesn't sound that good. Sadly, I don't have any other way to play it, so I might download it. What about the GBC version, though? I know it's actually Rayman 2, but if it's good, I wouldn't really mind.
