Mario Kart 8

While I returned to this game for checking amiibo content, I realised I haven't posted or commented much about Nintendo's latest Mario racer. So here's where my real starting line is! I think the game is such a natural sequel to MK7, it makes sense to add antigravity to races :) I'm glad the game has a modern screen resolution and is the first in the series to have downloadable tracks and drivers!

This is a nice introduction course :) The new antigravity design can be seen straight away, with THAT hairpin at a towering high angle! Although the surrounding world spins around during races like an F-Zero game, I still feel like it's a remarkably normal experience on track. I find the antigravity driving itself to be straightforward to control, somewhere between underwater and tarmac driving :)

I like the tilting effect when actually driving around the antigravity turns, like this towering hairpin from the first course :) It can feel weird but fun when you look up to see buildings appearing as if they've been built sideways! Also it's a nice touch to have the wheels turn on their sides during antigravity driving :)

The map is my favourite GamePad view :) I don't really use the TV view, horn or motion control options. However I sometimes use the motion controls as it reminds me of Mario Kart Wii :)

It's good to see a continuation of features from Mario Kart 7 for 3DS such as the gliding ability :) Plus since there's so much detail surrounding the courses, I still find myself spotting things I never noticed before!

The highlight reel is one of my favourite features in this game :) It's fun to see your race from the correct perspective and the resulting crazy views of antigravity driving around towering hairpins! I like the slow motion option a lot and it's fun to have complete control over forward or rewind play, at fast or slow play speeds :) Also it's nice to upload replays to YouTube or watch new replays!

Another benefit I like about the highlight reel is that you can sit back and take in all the visual details the game has to offer from the race that just ended :) This is just a screenshot of Mario exiting a corner from the highlight reel - but it's nice to see the full 3D model of Mario and his Kart. I admire the details of the wheels, Kart shape, Mario model and the track - it all looks so real!

Now THIS is something I like about mixing 3DS features (underwater driving) and the new antigravity feature :) It's cool that in some courses - like this second course from the Mushroom Cup - you can enter water at an extreme angle. Therefore the water can appear like an unnaturally dizzying, shimmering transparent wall as it races toward you!

It's nice to see the continuing tradition of at least one Mario Kart course having a double-word title! :)

A screenshot showing a few of my favourite things taken from the Mushroom Cup's final, Thwomp-themed, course :) The smooth transition from wall to ground driving, the cool lighting effects of both the exhaust flames and tunnel headlights and these cool Indiana Jones-style stone wheels :)

Front close-up of the headlights (which I noticed are only fitted for races requiring them) and that end-of-cup maximum points won satisfaction!

How to dodge a Thwomp - if your game is called Mario Kart 8! :)

It wouldn't be Mario Kart without the traditional trophy celebration! I think the trophy itself has a message which reads: 'Award for racing excellence. Congratulations!' Plus it's nice when you get the maximum three stars ★★★ especially for a 150cc race :) The stamp feature is awesome too, so I gave this Mushroom Cup and the game itself my stamp of approval!

I love this new Planet Earth for the online mode - especially when all the populated areas light up in the darkness :) It's really good that the online scoring system is still generally the same since the Wii :) I feel that it makes races and battles much more exciting as it's easy to pick your nearest rival based on similar rating. Also it's nice to see that online is still a smooth experience :)

I like this first page of the shop for downloadable content as it's a nice summary of the two main attractions in each pack. It's surreal to see Link in Mario Kart and Villager looks like he just stepped out from Smash! The artwork for Link here is nice :) I enjoy both these characters in the game and I was amazed by the huge amount of extra content that this first screen doesn't yet want to show!

Now this I'm looking forward to as it's the reason I returned to this game for a while :) I got some more amiibos since I last played the game, so I'll unlock a few of these cool character suits :)

So I've now used all my amiibos and unlocked some cool racing suits, such as a cool Link one :) However, THIS Yoshi one is now my favourite suit as it has the most interesting shape and looks more like the character it's designed to be!
