La storia di Sagat e Ryu è ispirata dal manga Karate Baka Ichidai: la trama è incentrata sullo scontro tra un karateka giapponese ed il campione tailandese di thaiboxing che aveva come segno distintivo una benda su un occhio. Nel primo Street Fighter era l'ultimo avversario da battere, il penultimo invece era il suo allievo Adon.
