First, the Sun Stone is further than you think. When you see the running Key Dee, get to the 3D Warp Star long before it runs into the pit of spikes. When you get there before it, attack it (or just run into it...) and grab the key. When you have the key, use the 3D Warp Star again to get back into the foreground and unlock the key door. Then, you will get the first Sun Stone. You're welcome.
