    Limbo wasn't the first. Actually DKC Returns was the first using Silhouette levels for gameplay changes and artistic styles. Limbo was just dark.

    Actually Limbo was released a couple of months before DKC Returns back in 2010. But there will be always one game earlier with this art style and that is not my point. At the moment Limbo is maybe the most popular game with these high contrasts, so I referenced this one.

    It was released before DKCR, but Nintendo showed those levels long time before the release. However, Limbo's tone did influence a lot of games, especially indie titles. And that's a problem. Limbo worked well, but other developers try to tell a story and forget about the gameplay. Also those storys mostly aren't that great either. World of Goo also was pretty dark and depressing - Awesome game.
