Fought this challenge today, everything was fine.... If you turn off your 3DS and start the game again does it work?

Nemeses sometimes crash the game. Belphegor and Turtle Dove are known for it. This is probably just one of the nasty ones that is prone to crashing. I would maybe update your village again tomorrow and try once more?
