when im in the equipment menu there's the 'recommend' icon and it always recommends a bow what?

A bow is likely your strongest weapon at this point. Optimise is based on strength alone and bows are two handed, so are more powerful unless you use the Knight's two handed ability on swords and stuff. I wouldn't use optimise. It doesn't work very well.
