ash: because i know that portals arnt the only way to travel to these dimensions. there are people... when they sleep, they travel to a dimension where they belong... they can replace someone, be a sibling, or even a bystander. these dimensions that these people travel to are what inspires tv shows, books, movies, video games, and more.
