I think Sonic Team just needs to pick a formula that works for Sonic and stick with it. Parts of the Sonic fanbase will complain no matter what so just find something that pleases enough people and stick with it. They constantly switch once they establish a formula whether is be classic 2D, Adventure, boosting, etc. This polarizes fans and prevents Sonic's gameplay from improving.
