Mario has stuck with the same 2D formula since his conception and has only changed his 3D formula recently to be similar to his 2D formula. If Sega/Sonic Team were to do that they could keep a consistency to grow a following fanbase from and add small additions/ gimmicks each game to keep things fresh.
