The advantage of this time system — and what makes Majora's Mask so special — is it allows the non-player characters to have schedules. Different characters do different things at different places at different times on different days — whether you're there to see it or not. Part of the joy of Majora's Mask is discovering these schedules and events and influencing their outcome. :-)
