I certainly don't think "Modern art" is what anyone is pushing for. Especially since these days art can be anything from a dot on a page to a bunch of random lines. I think VG (Some of them anyway) leans towards literature more than art, literature can't pull the same stuff art does and get away with it. Both have theme, plot, symbolism, character development and conflicts.
