It's kinda fan work and not at the same time, though. I mean, when you think of fan character (don't bring Sonic in), you think of someone's original character, that is supposed to be in a certain game said someone is a fan of. So, if you think of fan work, it's original work, of a Mario game, not an exact remake like say, a Sonic fan character. Sorry I could have worded that better.
