In technical terms, NES Metroid is inferior, but it WAS the first Metroid, and that was in the early days of the NES (1986). This game was the foundation that started this deep and wonderful franchise (even with dents in the armor). The lack of map is a con, but that didn't become standard until Metroid 3. And as said, it's an early NES game with program limitations. Older gamers will understand.
