dabbling in modern or futuristic, but not nearly as much as a typical medieval-type setting. The setting has bearing on a character's appearance, so I like to start with that along with their role in the story. After discerning that much, I can usually get an idea for how they need to look and I'll prepare a detailed character bio and backstory. At that point I begin the grueling naming process.
