Coloring is hard, no lie. What I like to do is start with dark base colors (depending on the situation). Then lighter highlights from the same color palette. I would play with the blurr tool and get a feel for it. It's almost like putting on make-up. You want your colors to blend and compliment each other. The intensity of the blurr tool can make or break this. IRL references will help in a pinch.
