And the fact that a sonic boom would kill off a lot of things around him, like the animals he has tried to save. Also, Sonic in Sonic CD's opening cutscene (which I assume is canon because it's on the game) actually seemed to be able to run and react to obstacles when there was nothing around him in particular. I'm pretty sure he CAN do it, but just won't do it since it's too dangerous.
