Well, it's really just a speculation. Since these (called "Morths", by the way) are first encountered in the same dungeon as the "Mothula" enemy, and we see Mothulas birthing these as a sort of defense mechanism (since Morths swarm you and slow your movement), it's likely that a Morth would eventually grow into a Mothula. Not that this would be shown in-game. xD
