It looks like a bomb rock went off, judging on the fact that the pikmin spirits sort of make a ring around a certain point, which would be ''Ground Zero''. The bomb rock would have been triggered by one of the fire geysers, or one of the pyroclasmic slooches, if they weren't already dead.
