Collect all shinies (he'll drop them anytime you make him crash out of flight), carve the tail, break the head, complete the subquest (if it has anything to do with Rathalos. If it's something like kill 5 Ioprey, it's useless) and capture. That would give you the absolute optimal chance at a plate.
