Almost all of the original Transformer were killed and those that weren't were changed in terms of their appearance. I believe it was the first time Optimus Prime, our lord and savior died. The idea was that Transformers toy sales was on the decline so they murdered and changed all of them in front of their fans in their first movie as a way to unveil a new toy line.
