I use the gamepad myself and don't have a problem with it, outside of accidentally exiting out of a picture. So... I'm willing to bet you haven't practised using it. Step 1. I've drawn enough and seen enough pictures to know the gamepad isn't an insurmountable obstacle. Then again, I use a cintiq to draw, so I'm used to that sort of stuff. Just keep trying.
