@ Ana. Yes this game is by far the best Lego game ever made, so if you like Lego games, this one is a must have. The three characters you get with the starter pack will let you play all through the story mode, but you will miss pickups here and there that require abilities the three starter pack characters don't have. As far as character recommendations go, I would say get all the ones you like.
