To add on to what everyone else said and hopefully conclude it, it feeds off the paradox that happens when you get sent back in time. Why does it want to kill you? thats the only way it gets fed. they cannot move while something is looking at them, so they freeze. The only way to get them to stop for good is to trick them into looking at eachother. then they all freeze unless their vision blocked.
