I had no idea who he was when he was announced, despite being a big gamer for over 20 years (mostly Nintendo though). Downloaded FFVII on a family member's PS3 after the announcement and have quite enjoyed it! Only about 10 hours in, and due to living in different houses, I only get to play it about once a week. He seems like quite an interesting character in the game so far.
