The game does look better with the delay to polish it up. I wouldn't say it's a great looking game but I think they've intentionally gone with a Star Fox 64 look. The motion controls in Splatoon show that they can work great when done properly. I'm sure the game will be good with just the lack of online multi being a disappointment.
