i think he's the 'straight man'... its a comady reference... the straight man (can be man or woman its just a title) is usally the smart intellectual when everyone else cracks jokes and are in general wacky... mostly at the expense of the straight man... there's a little more to than this but i dont have the space or knowledge to covey the rest...
