Like I said, it's all about careful saving. Do an easy level to save. This way, if you lose a life, you just quit the game from the Home Menu, then restart the game and try again. It's tedious, but it really makes your save file look nice in the end especially if you're not an expert and trust me, I'm no expert. Just very, very lucky.
