Everybody and their grandma knows of Pokemon. Both it and Smash Bros has been around since the 1990s. You can't expect the 1st game in a series with little to no kid-appeal (mascots), multiplayer, or familiar characters to take off like the others. It had little advertising, too. I remember seeing Pokemon and Smash ads during mainstream TV when they came out.
