In different areas, (The ones I think of are the Temple of Water and Fire, and the cave connecting Florem to Yulyana) There are these accolytes who look like humanoid owls. When you talk to them, they will test you to see if you're worthy of the summon. They'll get a first strike, attack with the summon, and if one person survives, you unlock it.
