I seem to remember in one of Maribelle's supports (I believe it's with Vaike) that he challenges him in a variety of ways such as gambling and the like. It's just the need to universally challenge him. Besides, Gaius could have easily missed Vaike doing it and likely referenced Chrom on the off chance that Vaike was dead when Gaius was recruited.
