For what it's worth, if you follow the main story, it does eventually lead you to some better armor, which helps (shout outs to Tri Force Heroes). The first few hours of Breath of the Wild seem to be the hardest so far, actually, but I'm only about 20% done with the game (optimistically speaking), so take that with a grain of salt.
