No matter the appearance, ghosts are usually benign and usually want something small. But the bad-ones - usually the imaginings of madmen - though their needs also simple, their appearances are frightening. (That also puts in a bad loop: people who see ghosts see something disturbing, they have bad dreams which makes disturbing ghosts.)
