Online play would require servers. Servers cost money. Given the previous few Sonic Boom games, money is something that Sega would probably be skeptical to spend too much of in this case, and servers would probably be crossing that limit. Now, since people are generally considering this game to be such a big improvement, who knows? Maybe it could be a feature added in an update?
