As for the name itself, I can think of plenty of reasons. It might have been believed to be impossible to exterminate, invulnerable and untouchable like it was a "ghost". It was an undetectable force, so you wouldn't realize if you were being infected. It was invisible and silent. Those afflicted no longer acted the same, similar in the sense of a "zombie".
