I think TFA almost serves as a reboot in a way, similar to the new Star Trek films. It's very good, familiar to long term fans but does seem more aimed at newcomers. You could watch it on its own with no knowledge of the previous ones and still enjoy it but there's stuff there for those into the franchise. Best of luck with the finals btw!
