I think they just wanted to make it more cultural to america. If they left the "Cheese sandwich" text in Earthbound, it wouldn't really make sense. So they just added some humor and there you go. (I think Earthbound is also the reason why so many photographers tell you to say "Fuzzy Pickles." :3)
