i like the brainwash theory but the octolings and the inklings never became friends. also why would they team up with octavio?! he is evil, stole the zapfish and kidnapped captain cuddlefish! also i heard that splatoon's website or something uploaded some stories about what happened after the final splatfest, so that may give us an idea. i know a channel call GAMEXPLAIN is reading them on youtube.
