You can message and facetime people over Wi-Fi (but they must have an Apple device aswell) the iPod dosent support 4g or cellular connectivity just Wi-Fi, you have to have an Apple ID to use iMessage and facetime, if you want to send a message just add your friends email in contacts and a message bubble will come up.
